Background

My pre-military and post-military environments were ones relatively devoid of toxic exposures.

I joined the Air Force in 1985 and served until 1992. I was stationed at Kirtland AFB, then Kelly AFB. After I was diagnosed with PD, I started researching "Why?". Boy did I ever learn.

Kelly AFB was established in 1916 as the first military air base in Texas. It was used as a military depot and a major training base. After World War II, an increased emphasis was placed on the base's depot-level maintenance activities. Kelly AFB managed more than 75 percent of the aircraft and auxiliary engines for the entire U.S. Air Force. It also utilized thousands of gallons of fuels, oils, solvents, and other petroleum products. Past waste management practices at Kelly AFB resulted in several releases of industrial chemical contaminants. The most common contaminants were chlorinated solvents (i.e., PCE, TCE, 1,2-DCE, and vinyl chloride).

PCE and TCE are common solvents that were used at Kelly to degrease engine parts. Over the years, the chemicals entered the shallow groundwater as a result of leaks, spills or disposal practices that were approved at the time.

Kelly AFB was for half a century a major United States Air Force aircraft maintenance station. Industrial wastes from activities conducted at Kelly AFB are alleged to have contaminated shallow groundwater and soil in and around Kelly with organic solvents and other toxic compounds. Trichloroethene (trichloroethylene; TCE) and tetrachloroethene (perchloroethylene; PCE) are among several contaminants discovered in the groundwater under the base.

According to a records search conducted in 1982, outdated pesticides and empty containers were disposed of during the 1950s and 1960s at various landfill sites, located in what is currently the golf course, along Leon Creek.
